Since I was in high school, I always had the thought in my mind that I would be a teacher one day. I didn’t initially go down this route, but instead I ventured into the programming and IT field. Eventually, I found myself in Education and one of the frequently asked questions is “Why do you do what you do?”. My “why” is because I desire to give students the experiences that I wish I could have had in high school. I am the Computer Science and IT teacher. I have the opportunity to teach these students skillsets that will allow them to be successful anywhere. There is always a need for more programmers and more tech support.

COVA learning is based on the ideas of choice, ownership, voice, and authenticity. I am utilizing this approach for my e-portfolio. I have perused several website creation tools and I have chosen to work with Wix. I am taking ownership of my e-portfolio by designing it the way I want and incorporating some elements of my own personality. I am beginning to create a blog where I can share my voice about topics that I study and learn. Throughout all of this, I know that my learning is completely authentic as an e-portfolio is a resource that I will continuously modify and improve. As an example, as I develop professional developments, I can simply add it to my blog. This is just one example of how my e-portfolio can be utilized beyond this class.

So far in the program, the most valuable lesson I have learned is to really self-reflect. Reflection is the key to growth and understanding, but it all stems from the foundational reflection of oneself. I know that I am mostly a growth-mindset person thanks to my father instilling an attitude to always look for ways to improve upon my skillsets. Additionally, I have learned to step out of my comfort zone even more than normal. Leaving the comfort zone is an essential step in persistent growth.

Key Takeaways From Peer Discussions:

  • If students are engaged and the content is relevant for their future, they will care about learning for the sake of learning, rather than just a grade.

  • Self-reflection is essential to growth as a learner and an educator.

  • Providing effective and timely feedback can significantly improve a learners desire to learn.
